Check in with the Twisitor Center for Travel Plans

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

Florida Welcome CenterTwitter, the micro-blogging and social networking site that asks “What are you doing?” in 140 characters or less, is so hot that twitterers are tweeting in church, while giving news broadcasts, while sitting in Congress listening to President Barack Obama, and one can only imagine where else twitterers are tweeting. Twitter connects users with like interests and  twitterers are using the service to plan vacations.

One site that makes it easy to connect with a tourism office in order to find out what to do when vacationing is TwisitorCenter.com. Here, traveling twitterers can see if their vacation destination has a Twitter account and can easily follow and interact with the tourism office. Portland, Ore., has the distinguished honor of being the first Twisitor Center by monitoring the code #inpdx (called a tag or hash tag) and encouraging visitors with questions about where to go, see, eat, sleep, etc., to include #inpdx in their posts.

Google Maps makes it easy to locate a particular destination and at the time of this blog post, listed Twisitor Centers are primarily located throughout the United States with a handful in Europe. But, as Twitter grows in popularity, expect to see more destinations added to the TwisitorCenter.com map.

Heading to the Orlando area for vacation? Follow VISIT FLORIDA (the state’s official tourism marketing corporation) and the Kissimmee Convention & Visitors Bureau on Twitter for tips on where to play, dine, and enjoy. Although these destinations don’t have designated hash tags (yet) or a way to hand you a fresh squeezed cup of orange juice, @reply them with a question and they’ll have the answer.

Be sure to follow Resort Rentals International on Twitter.
