Bloggers Unite to Tell ‘The Truth About Mexico’
Blogger’s Note: This post involves discussion of the travel alert for Mexico. Remain calm, all is fine.
We recently blogged about the travel alert for Mexico posted by the United States State Department. To recap, the government is warning college spring breakers to avoid vacationing in Mexico due to escalating violence in northern Mexico along the U.S. border and kidnappings across the country. Did you catch that? “..violence in northern Mexico along the U.S. border.”
Most of the popular Mexico spring break destinations (Acapulco, Cancun, Cozumel, and Puerto Vallarta) are located well south of the reported violence, however, colleges and the U.S. media have joined in the U.S. government’s efforts in warning students. In response, several Mexican-based bloggers, most expatriates from the U.S. or Canada, have started a blog called ‘The Truth About Mexico’ to tell the world what’s really happening down south.
The contributors admit there is violence in Mexico but in the post “Spring Break in Mexico: Do the Math Kids” by Frank Koughan, former 60 Minutes producer and author of the blog “Burro Hall,” he breaks down the 669 American non-natural deaths (in a very entertaining manner) from January 2005 through December 2007. The majority died in accidents, some died from drug overdoses with a handful committing suicide. Citing the Houston Chronicle which investigated four years of American mortalities in Mexico, 200 were murdered with 130 of them being criminals or drug users.
The site includes updates on safety levels in each Mexican state and addresses concerns by potential visitors. Be sure to check out the map highlighting the violent areas and see the distance between those hot spots and the major tourist destinations.
It’s evident those who write for ‘The Truth About Mexico’ love their new country and take safety when visiting Mexico seriously. That’s why the site was created. They want to ensure people traveling to Mexico are properly informed when making vacation an spring break plans. As usual, we recommend utilizing common sense when traveling anywhere for a positively memorable vacation.
