Delta Goes Pink to Fight Breast Cancer
Rocker Melissa Etheridge, who is the Hard Rock International PINKTOBER(TM) Ambassador, helped Delta Air Lines kick off its fifth year of support for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) on Sept. 29 by giving a live, in-flight performance on a flight from New York- JFK to Washington D.C. – Reagan National Airport. Etheridge, a breast cancer survivor, sang her hit song, “I Run for Life” but changed the lyrics for, “I Fly for Life,” aboard Delta’s signature pink plane.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and prior to the flight, Delta, Etheridge, BCRF, and representatives from The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey were on hand to light the exterior of the JFK air traffic control tower in pink.
The Sept. 29 pink flight was the first in a series of planned October activities to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Delta flight attendants will wear pink t-shirts, pink dresses (see a photo here of the stylish garment) and Delta customers can purchase pink lemonade during the month of October for $2 with net proceeds benefiting BCRF. Not flying Delta soon? Pick up sassy Delta and BCRF pink items such as pink luggage tags, tumblers, and aprons to benefit BCRF at the Delta Shop.
Delta employees can purchase special pink items, too and last year, staff and customers helped raise $500,000 for BCRF through donations and pink product sales. Since 2005, Delta has raised nearly $1.5 million for BCRF through donations from customers, employees and The Delta Foundation, the airline’s charitable organization. Donations have funded the work of five researchers dedicated to the mission of achieving prevention and finding a cure for breast cancer.
All this pink talk has this blogger of jet setting to some rosy destination, like St. Maarten or Puerto Vallarta. What about you?
